Much like the original ArmA 2 mod DayZ, this is a (free) mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas made to be used with the multiplayer client "Multi Theft Auto".
It is pretty much the original DayZ down to a tee - it's got a range of weapon, foods, drinks, items such as a map, GPS, lighters and tools to go with it, like medicine supplies. Vehicles need repairing and fuel to work and are extremely rare. There are various skins, an inventory system (letting you hold a lot of weapons, but only equip one primary and one secondary). But it's also a whole lot more forgiving (kinda). Zombies don't follow you forever and are rather easy to shake off. However to compensate for that they hurt you more, they take more hits and they run in straight lines and not in zigzag. It's not as realistic as Arma2's DayZ - but it has the same entertainment value, it has the same focus on survival. You still need to gather food and water, you still have to patch yourself up when you're injured. One thing that MTA: DayZ has over regular DayZ is stuff like melee combat and brightness. You can attack zombies clean with knifes, katanas, and your own fists (although I cannot confirm the effectiveness of the latter).
Of course, ArmA 2 DayZ has the realism aspect, and is overall better, but this has it's own charm to it. It's more stable, optimization isn't an issue unless your PC is literally a decade old - and hell, it's San Andreas! Who doesn't love San Andreas?
What you need to play:
[*]Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, version 1.0*
[*]Multi Theft Auto - http://www.mtasa.com/
[*]Survival instincts!
*The Steam version does not work without a bit of fiddling around, but you can downgrade it using an unofficial patch or using a 1.0 .exe file to replace the gta_sa.exe
You can however use THIS downgrader: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1952458 (linked by sw174)
That's all you need! Install MTA, fiddle with the settings until you find what works for you, and fire up the server browser! There's plenty of servers to go around, all over the world! So just take your pick and join right in!
